Seminars

All seminars consist of 7 lectures. They will be of interest to architects, surveyors, conservation professionals and planners for specification writing and site supervision, as well as owners of historic and listed properties. Lunch and refreshments are included.CPD certificates are provided for all seminars.

Materials for Historic Buildings.
9am - 4.30pm. Thursday 22nd May 2008 at Cressing Temple Barns.
This seminar will look at the range of materials found in historic buildings in East Anglia and how they contribute to the special character of those buildings. It will consider the history of these materials, how they can be repaired, and their availability today. The day will include timber and infill, brick, lime plaster, render, pargetting and cladding, thatch, roofs, metal work and new materials.Cost £80.

New Development in a Historic Context.
9am - 4.30pm. Thursday 10th July 2008 at Cressing Temple.
Achieving good design in town centres and conservation areas is a challenge which we must confront if we are to preserve their historic character. This day will address methods for understanding and appraising the site and its setting, and will look at approaches to the design of new build, ranging from extensions to infill and large scale development.Cost £80.

Saving Historic Buildings.
Wednesday 24th. September 2008 at Writtle College.
Derelict buildings have a negative effect on the character of an area. This day will look at the legal powers and the processes for tackling the problem, including funding options and the work of preservation trusts illustrated with case studies.Cost £80.

Public Realm - streetscape, landscape, highway issues.
Wednesday 29th October 2008 at Writtle College.
The public realm affects the quality and setting of our historic buildings and town centres. Good public realm is the key to a successful place. The day will look at how different materials can be used, the design of street furniture, public art, and the practical issues of details and green spaces, illustrated with a case study.
Cost £80.
