What we did in 2004

March 27th - Spend a magical day at the Cressing Easter egg hunt. Hot cross buns on the menu and an Easter egg hunt for the children. Work up an appetite on the bouncy castle or be delighted with Dan's magic show. Starts at 11.30am. Children: £2.50. Adults free if accompanied by children!!

 Impossible Knights joust to the limit....

March 28th - Joust. Mounted knights from Horses Impossible cross swords and lances in the noblest of old English sports at the Cressing joust. Take time to watch the skill of the sword fights & archery; sideshows of craftsmen & games. Jugglers, stilt walkers & story tellers; eat & drink at the medieval tavern on hog roast and real ale. 10.30am-4.30pm. Jousts start at 12.00 & 3pm. Adults: £8. Con: £6. April 3rd - Kite Festival. Join the Essex & Suffolk Kite Club to enjoy the antics of the power & kite buggies and stunt kite flying demonstrations! Sorry, no public flying while demonstrations are on. From 11am. £1.50 per person (small charge for making kites).

April 23rd/24th - Hallmark's Antiques & Collectables Fair.

Archaeology

During the excavations in 1998 varied artefacts were found that could prove to be evidence of a high status Roman building. With time constraints and the sheer size and complexity of the task, the 'dig' was closed down. In May of this year ECC Field Archaeology Unit will work with the Brain Valley Archaeology Group at weekends and the site will be re-opened.

May 7th/8th - Templars' Fayre. Cressing's annual medieval market. Over a hundred merchants from all over Europe selling everything from armour to jewellery; pottery to swords. Medieval entertainment from puppeteers, dancers and singers. Visit our medieval tavern for food & refreshments. 10.30am-5pm. Adults: £4. Con: £3.

May 19th - Basic Maintenance of Historic Buildings. Aimed at new owners of historic buildings to show them sympathetic ways of repairing their historic building. Illustrated talks with demonstrations at lunchtime. 9.30am-4.30pm.Cost £35 includes lunch.

Churchfitters

May 29th - Folk Festival. Music, dance, food & drink for all the family. Our headliner for this year is The Churchfitters, supported by The Fingersmiths, Adrian Nation, John Potts & Mike Trim, The Itchy Feet Ceilidh Band and much, much more. From 11am. Adults: £12.50. Family ticket: £27 (2 adults, 3 children). For tickets call 01206 500900.

June 5th - Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. The Festival Players Theatre Company consists of a small but impressive and creative team. The company patron is Bill Alexander formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Performance 3pm. Adults: £14. Con: £12. To book tickets call 01376 584453.

June 5th - British Swordsmanship Association. The BSA is holding their annual meeting at Cressing this weekend and visitors to the site can enjoy demonstrations of the age old art of sword play. Site opens 10.30am. Adults: £3.50. Con: £2.50. Family ticket: £9.50

June 18th - Building the Medieval Timber Framed Building. Seminar to consider the requirements and practicalities involved in the construction of medieval timber framed buildings; the trees, tools, preparation and assembly of the buildings with the in-filling of the frame with variations and the distinguishing types of roof structure. 9am-4.45pm. June 26th - VCM Car & Motorcycle Show. A show of some of the best vintage, classic and modern cars and bikes. Music by the Down Home Jazz Band, and "it looks like" you may even see Del Boy and Uncle Albert. The North East Essex Family History Association will be on hand to trace your ancestors. Complimentary therapies and Indian head massage. Food and beer tents. 10.30am-5pm. Adults: £3.50. Children free with an adult

June 30th - Buildings at Risk. A day of illustrated talks with some case studies, bringing all those involved with buildings at risk together, (conservation officers, building preservation trusts, local authorities, etc) identifying the problems and working together to resolve those problems. 9.30am-4.30pm. Cost £50 includes lunch.

July 2nd - Cressing Rock Festival. A charity concert promoted by the Braintree & Bocking Rotary Club will feature The Blues Band, Dr Feel-good, Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band. July 21st - The House Detectives. A day of illustrated talks on how to get documentation on historic buildings, going through the history of the buildings in Essex from medieval timber frame to the Victorian brick. 9am-4.30pm. Cost £50 includes lunch.

July 31st - Discover Dowsing. Find out how archaeologists use the fascinating art of dowsing with Barry Hillman-Crouch and Colin Peal. Buy your rods from the gift shop. No need to book. Two sessions: 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm. £3.50.

July 31st - Medieval Banquet. Presenting a Royal Banquet in honour of Henry VIII held here at Cressing Temple. Take a trip back in time with a superb four course banquet and non-stop entertainment. Archaeological Digs for Kids in August.

Lefty - a roman buried at CT.

New for this year for children to have some hands on experience of uncovering ancient finds. They will work on the dig and then in the finds and marking up areas. Limited spaces. Booking advised. Childrens' Summer Holiday Activity Days

An opportunity for children to join in history days, meeting and talking to historical characters and join in the craft activities and games. History days on the following Thursdays through August and September.

August 16th - Design in the Historic Environment. A day of illustrated talks to show how important it is for good design within the historic environment and putting development in the right place. 9am-4.30pm. Cost £50 includes lunch.

August 19th/20th/21st - The Anglian Contemporary Art Fair. Over 30 galleries. Adults: £4. Children free with an adult.

September 3rd/4th - Hallmark's Antiques & Collectables Fair. Tastes, styles and designs from ancient to 1950s/1960s. 9.30am-4.30pm. Adults: £3. Con: £2. Children free with an adult. Hallmark Fairs: 01702 710383.

Creating a timber-framed building.

September 8th - Redundant Farm Buildings. A day of illustrated talks and case studies to identify the problem of redundant farm buildings, discussing options other than residential conversion as to what to do with them. 9am-4.30pm. Cost £50 includes lunch

September 10th/11th - Guild of Essex Craftsman 6th Annual Fair. Guild's Annual exhibition and sale of work. Proceeds to the Essex Air Ambulance. 10.30am-5.30pm. Contact Celia Reed: 01277 356008.

October 1st/ 2nd - Knights of the Longshanks. 13th to 14th century Living History Encampment. Their show includes the following: A history talk showing the weaponry and armour that was used during the period. A combat display showing how the weapons were used. A chance for children and adults alike to try their hand at archery. A chance to try on and examine the armour and weaponry. Members of the society are on hand throughout the day to talk to you and answer any questions. All this and more takes place in a roped arena encompassing the encampment.

Planting ancient orchards

October 15th/16th - The Essex Food Show and Cressing Apple Day. Delicious foods, wines, beers and spirits, kitchen accessories, cookery demonstrations and tastings. PLUS The East of England Apple and Orchards Project with a huge display of apple varieties, bring along your own apples for identification.

The Cressing Temple Tudors

Tudor Household Re-enactment and Alchemists Shop.
The Big Draw presented by Braintree Art Club. This is a national initiative aimed at heritage sites to get the country drawing. This will take place in the conference room and will take the form of a Bayeauxesque-type mural with drawings of the weekend arranged in a timeline and joined together with a river running through it and a border top and bottom.

The Nutmeg Puppet Company presents 'Apple Pip', a show with puppets, storytelling, songs and original music plus theatre workshops (for 3-6 year olds and their families, Sunday only, additional charge).
Maypole Dancing and Children's Craft Workshops.
Admission Adults £2.50 and Children £1.50, Under three's - free of charge.

October 26th - Autumn Treasures. Children's Crafts for half term 10-12am, 1-3pm. £3.50 per person, under 3s free, all materials included. Children need to be accompanied by an adult.

October 30th - Things that Go Bump in the Night. 1-4pm, £3.50 per person.
We can't guarantee a ghost will appear, but children can have a horrible Halloween with an afternoon of terrifying tales, ghoulish games and creepy crafts. Come and see our live owls, live bats and meet the haunting Hallman in the Tudor cellar (ghost story teller).

November 26th/ 27th - Christmas Craft Fair by Penny Farthing Fairs. Everything you need for the perfect present. High quality crafts and demonstrations. £2.50/ £1.50.


December 14th - Cressing Temple Xmas Sale.
