Cressing Temple Half Term Activities

Tuesday 13th - Circles and Spheres. Working with shapes for example curve stitching, complex solid shapes and picture making in a range of media. 11am - 3pm. £6.50 on the day. Pre-booked £5.50.

Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd - St George's Joust and Fayre. Celebrate our patron saint at a full weekend showcasing warfare through the ages. Marvel at mounted knights crossing lances in this spectacular old English sport. Catch knights in shining armour and archers in battle. The very best in Napoleonic era re-enactment. Regiments from French and English armies, forming a living history encampment, will put on a full programme of spectacular drills and displays. 15 different War Games Societies demonstrating over the weekend. Specialist traders and book sellers, costume display, learn about Regency fine dining. Appearance by Jason Salkey of ' Sharpe's Rifles'. Tues 15th - Historic Home Owners' Day. 9am - 4.30pm. During a day of illustrated talks we will cover a variety of issues that face owners of historic properties: What listing means, including curtilage listing, how to apply for listed building consent (including building recording and design & access statements), listed buildings & building regulations, damp & breathability, case studies looking at an owner's and an architect's point of view. There will also be the opportunity to watch traditional craftsmen at work, demonstrating lime plastering, pargetting, thatching and leaded window repair.

Sat 26th - The Knights Templar and the Legacy of the Crusading Orders.
9am-4.45pm. This conference will address the question of the Templars' arrest 700 years ago. It will also investigate how the Templars and Hospitallers managed their estates, their impact on the historic landscape, and their architectural heritage in England and the Holy Land. Sun 24th - VCM Car & Motorcycle Show. 11am-4.30pm. Showcasing some of the best vintage, classic and modern cars and motorcycles. Music by the Down Home Jazz Band, Fowler Showman's Traction Engine will be seen working. Displays of 1940s dancers against a backdrop of vehicles from this era, including the famous replica of the 1939 Silver Bird. Family entertainment throughout the day. Go back in time with a Templar Knight (costumed interpreter). He will guide you round this fascinating Templar site and help you to imagine what it would have been like to be one of the mysterious warrior monks, made famous by the Da Vinci Code. This is part of our commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the abolition of this controversial order of monks.There will be a falconry demonstration at 2pm (weather permitting).

With the passage of time, the appreciation of Victorian architecture has changed, and the conservation of Victorian buildings has become a more urgent issue. Every Tuesday in School Holidays: (31st July, 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th Aug).

2 hour long sessions at 9am, 11am or 1.30pm. For children from 5 to 10 years old. Come and learn about archaeology from archaeologist Barry Hillman-Crouch. He will share with you the secrets of the past and how to uncover them. Excavate a 'real' archaeological site using real tools. There will also be craft demonstrations. The famed English Civil War re-enactors the Sealed Knot will be encamped in a living history settlement over the weekend and re-enacting C17th life.! Galloping Galaxies

Fri 19th - Astronomy Evening. 7pm-9pm. Budding star gazers must not miss the Astronomy Evening on Friday 19th October 7pm - 9 pm at Cressing Temple, near Braintree. Cressing Temple will make an excellent vantage point due its rural location and non-polluted skies.

Members of the North Essex Astronomical Society will be on hand to demonstrate how to use telescopes and lenses, and present short talks on various astronomical subjects. Jerry Workman, a well-known astronomical speaker, will be giving a talk on Mars, illustrated by many beautiful slides of the magnificent views of Mars taken by the Mars Rovers over the past few years.

There will be the opportunity to join the Society - who have their own facilities, including a large telescope. Astronomical shop Green Witch will have a trade stand, where you can buy a planisphere, which enables you to know which stars are visible at any time of year!

Tickets are £5 adults, £4 concessions and £15 for a family ticket.
